The confusion around generative engine optimization vs AIO comes from one fact: AIO means two different things, either "AI optimization" in general or optimising for Google's AI Overviews specifically, so GEO is either the same idea under another name or the bigger umbrella that includes AIO. Once you know which meaning someone is using, the comparison is easy.

I get asked this a lot. Someone hears "AIO" from one agency, "GEO" from another, and "AEO" from a third, and assumes they are three different services. Mostly they are not. This page clears up the terms, shows where Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode fit, and gives you one plan that works whichever label you use.

If you would rather just get a plan for your site, get a free SEO strategy session. It is a one-to-one call where my team looks at your site, competitors and nearest-win keywords, then gives you a game plan for Google and AI search. For the weekly workflows, the AI Profit Boardroom is $69/mo.

The Two Meanings of AIO

Meaning 1: AI optimization

Some people use AIO as a broad term for optimising your brand and content so AI tools find, use and mention you. In this meaning, AIO and GEO are basically the same thing. Different word, same job.

Meaning 2: AI Overviews optimization

Others use AIO to mean optimising for Google's AI Overviews, the AI-written summary that appears at the top of some Google searches. In this meaning, AIO is narrower. It is one surface inside one search engine.

Neither meaning is wrong. The problem is people using the word without saying which one they mean. So when someone pitches you "AIO", ask: do you mean all AI tools, or just Google's AI Overviews?

Generative Engine Optimization vs AIO, Meaning by Meaning

Generative engine optimization means getting named, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. The term comes from a 2023 research paper on generative search engines.

So in the narrow meaning, AIO is a slice of GEO. Do GEO well and you are doing AIO too.

The Glossary

Here are all the terms you are likely to hear, in plain English.

TermMeaningExample
SEORanking pages in Google's classic resultsYour page shows as a blue link for a search
GEOGetting named, cited and recommended in AI-written answersChatGPT or Perplexity names your brand in a list
AEOBeing THE answer: featured snippets, voice, and now AI answersA voice assistant reads your answer out
AIO (broad)AI optimization in generalUsed the same way as GEO
AIO (narrow)Optimising for Google's AI OverviewsYour site is linked in the AI summary at the top of Google
AI OverviewsGoogle's AI summary above some search resultsFor "best HARO agency", the AI Overview links to Goldie Agency first
AI ModeGoogle's conversational AI searchAI Mode's "best GEO experts to follow in 2026" list has me number one

Every one of these rests on SEO. AI answers summarise pages that rank and sources they trust.

Where AI Overviews and AI Mode Fit

Google now has two AI surfaces you should care about.

AI Overviews sit at the top of normal search results for some queries. They summarise and link to sources. This is what the narrow meaning of AIO targets.

AI Mode is Google's conversational search, where people ask follow-up questions and get longer AI answers. When I checked, it was running Gemini 4 Argon. For "best GEO expert", both Google's AI answer and AI Mode name me first.

If you only optimise for AI Overviews, you are leaving AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and the rest on the table. That is why I think in GEO terms, which covers all of them. You can see how that played out for "best AI community": the AI Profit Boardroom is number one in Google's AI with two placements, and the content ranks number one organically too.

One Practical Plan, Whatever You Call It

The label does not change the work. Here is the plan I use. I call it the Answer Engine framework.

  1. Be the source. Publish real case studies. Your own tests are facts the AI cannot invent, which is why AI answers quote experts who do public testing.
  2. Be everywhere. Several sites and platforms, including r/AISEOInsider, each angle pointing to the same answer. If one site drops, the others stay.
  3. Be first. Publish within about 24 hours on trending topics.

Then follow Google's updated guidance from 1 October 2026: fact-check and review AI-assisted content before publishing, including text, metadata, structured data and image alt text.

The Free Tools I Use

You do not need a paid AIO tool to start. My stack is Hermes Agent (free, open source), OpenCode as the free brain running DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and Google Search Console. The full setup is in my Agent OS guide.

  1. Export Search Console data to CSV.
  2. Give it to Hermes and ask what is working and which keywords and topics to target in AI search.
  3. Read its report: clicks, brand share of clicks, non-brand click-through rate, what is working.
  4. Pick a keyword and give Hermes an SEO skill plus access to WordPress or Netlify. Mine is a roughly 100-point checklist inside the AI Profit Boardroom.
  5. Let it write and publish around your case studies.
  6. Check AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity.

That process took one of my sites from zero to 1,300+ clicks a day, with one day showing 9,600+ impressions in Google's AI features. I test the models I use on Goldie Bench.

How to Talk to an Agency About AIO

A clear answer to those four tells you more than any acronym.

Common AIO Myths

"AIO replaces SEO"

It does not. Whichever meaning you use, AI answers summarise pages that rank and sources they trust. Lose your rankings and you give the AI less to work with.

"You need a special AIO tool to start"

You can start with free tools. Search Console data plus an agent like Hermes is enough to find what is working and what to target next.

"AI Overviews are the only AI surface that matters"

Google also has AI Mode, and people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot too. Optimising for one surface only leaves the others to your competitors.

FAQ

Is AIO the same as GEO?

If AIO means "AI optimization", yes, close enough. If it means "AI Overviews optimization", it is one part of GEO.

Is AIO the same as AEO?

They overlap. AEO is about being the direct answer, from featured snippets and voice through to AI answers. AIO in the narrow sense focuses on Google's AI Overviews.

Do I need separate strategies for AI Overviews and AI Mode?

No. The same plan works for both: be the source, be everywhere, be first, on top of solid SEO.

How do I get started?

Get a free SEO strategy session. It is a one-to-one call, not a written report, and you leave with a game plan.

Ask which AIO someone means, then run one plan that covers every AI surface. That settles generative engine optimization vs AIO. When you are ready, book your free GEO strategy session.
