In Grok Bot vs Codex, pick Codex if your work is mostly code, and pick Grok Bot if your work is mostly business tasks across apps with some coding on the side. Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. Grok Bot is xAI's team of general agents that hands coding jobs to Cursor Cloud Agents.

They overlap less than the names suggest. Below: what each one is, how the coding actually works on both sides, a side-by-side table, and a clear verdict on who should use which.

What Grok Bot is

Grok Bot is a team of AI agents from xAI, which has operated as SpaceX AI since the July merger. It went into public beta on 11 August 2026 and was built with Cursor. You get several Bots, and each Bot has its own computer in the cloud with its own screen and browser. There are apps for Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone (beta).

The pitch is broad. A Bot reads your Gmail, books things, shops with your approval, runs routines on a schedule, posts in Slack and works through plugins for apps like Notion, Linear, Stripe and QuickBooks. Coding is one job among many.

Every feature date on this page comes from the official changelog at x.ai/changelog/bot.

What Codex is

OpenAI's README on GitHub describes Codex CLI as "a coding agent from OpenAI that runs locally on your computer." The open-source repo uses the Apache-2.0 license and has more than 132,000 stars. Codex comes in four places:

It ships fast. Release 0.166.0 landed on GitHub on 29 October 2026 with keyboard-driven transcript search, GPT-6.1 Terra in the model catalogs and a new network diagnostic. Release 0.165.0 on 27 October added a built-in Google Cloud Vertex AI provider and turned memory v2 on by default for fresh profiles.

If you want to run agents like these across a real business, not just one repo, the AI Profit Boardroom ($69/mo) gives you the Agent OS, a 30-day AI agent roadmap, daily tutorials as new tools drop, weekly coaching calls and the prompt library.

How Grok Bot does coding

Grok Bot does not have its own coding engine in the changelog. It starts Cursor Cloud Agents and connects to your code hosts.

The strength is the glue. A Bot can watch a single pull request through a GitHub routine (v0.25.0), pick up a Sentry alert or a Linear issue as a trigger (v0.17.0), start the fix in a cloud agent and post the result in Slack. The coding itself happens in Cursor's agent.

How Codex does coding

Codex is the coding engine. You work with it where the code lives.

Locally, OpenAI's security docs say the agent runs with network access off by default, inside an OS-enforced sandbox that usually limits it to the current workspace, plus an approval policy that decides when it stops and asks you. In the cloud, each task runs in its own environment with the dependencies Codex installed during setup.

Codex also has computer use now. OpenAI's docs say it runs in the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows through a Computer Use plugin, with Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions. That is your own machine, not a separate cloud computer like Grok Bot's. You can read more about the Grok side in Grok Bot computer use.

On access: OpenAI's Codex pricing page, read on 31 October 2026, lists the full set (web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS) on Plus at $20 a month, with a limited Codex in the desktop app on Free and Go. An API key gives you the CLI, SDK and IDE extension but no cloud features like GitHub code review or Slack. xAI's changelog says that from v0.27.0 on 25 August, Cursor Pro, SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers who link their account can use Grok Bot, and v0.78.1 points new users to unified plans.

Verdict: who should pick which

Pick Codex if

Pick Grok Bot if

For a coding-first team, Codex wins this comparison. For a business-first team, Grok Bot covers more ground, and it borrows Cursor's agent for the coding.

When I tested Grok Bot the day after launch in August, the onboarding was excellent but its computer use failed on a simple task. I wrote that up in Grok Bot vs Hermes. The changelog shows a lot of fixes since then, so the gap may have closed, but that is the version I used.

The open alternative: Hermes Agent and Agent OS

Both products lock you into one company's meters and plans. If you want to own the stack, Hermes Agent is open source, runs any model you choose and works across Telegram, Slack, Discord and more. Agent OS wraps it into a full workspace, and the setup is in the Agent OS guide.

If you want to see how agents compare on the same task, the Goldie Bench runs one job across tools and scores what actually happened. For a cheaper way into the Grok side, see Grok Bot free alternative.

FAQ

Is Grok Bot better than Codex for coding?

No. Codex is a dedicated coding agent with a CLI, IDE extension and cloud tasks. Grok Bot sends coding to Cursor Cloud Agents and adds GitHub tools on top. It is stronger at the work around the code, like triggers, routines and Slack updates.

Can Grok Bot and Codex work together?

Not directly in either changelog. You can run Codex on your repo and let Grok Bot handle the business side, like watching a pull request and posting updates in Slack.

Is Codex free?

OpenAI's pricing page lists a limited Codex in the desktop app on the Free plan, subject to rollout. The full set of web, CLI, IDE and iOS starts on ChatGPT Plus. The CLI code itself is open source.

What should a small business use?

If you don't write code, start with a general agent setup, not a coding agent. Inside the AI Profit Boardroom you get the Agent OS and the roadmap to run it. Or book a free AI strategy session and we'll pick the right tool with you.
