MissingNo is a free stealth coding and agentic reasoning model on Nous Portal that you can run in Hermes Agent right now. If you searched hermes missingno, here's the short version: it's free for a limited time, it's fast at tool calls, it's good enough for skills and bots, and it is not a frontier coder. I tested it in Hermes Cloud and in my own setup, and below is exactly what I found and how to switch it on.

What is MissingNo?
Nous Research announced MissingNo on 10 October 2026. Their post said a wild MISSINGNO. appeared, described it as a coding and agentic reasoning model that is highly token efficient, and said it is free for a limited time on Nous Portal so you can try it in your Hermes Agent today.
It's a stealth model. That means the lab behind it hasn't been named. My guess is it could be Nous itself, but that's a guess, nothing more. Nobody has confirmed who built it.
The name is a Pokémon reference. MissingNo, short for "missing number", was the famous glitch in the original games. Fitting for a model that turned up with no name attached.
Here's what we actually know:
- It's listed at $0.00 per million tokens in the Nous Portal free catalog.
- Free-tier rate limits apply.
- The free catalog changes, so MissingNo could go paid or disappear.
- One forum report says it has a 262K context window. That's unconfirmed, so don't plan around it yet.
Nous Portal is Nous Research's subscription gateway, and per the Hermes docs it's the recommended way to run Hermes Agent. One OAuth login covers the model catalog plus the Tool Gateway for web search, image generation, text-to-speech and browser automation.
If you want to see how I run Hermes every day, with a separate profile for every model I test, that's all inside the AI Profit Boardroom. You get the Hermes courses, my Agent OS zip, daily updates and 4 coaching calls a week for $69/mo.
My Hermes MissingNo test: strengths and limits
I run Hermes daily inside my own Agentic Operating System, and I give every model its own profile. So MissingNo got its own profile, sitting right next to StepFun Step 5, which is another free model I've been using. Same setup, same tasks, easy to compare.
Where it's strong
- It's free. You pay nothing while the free window lasts.
- It's fast. Replies come back quickly, and agentic tool calls fire without hanging around.
- Skill creation works. I used it with /learn and it built a skill quickly. Honestly, it worked really well. Per the Hermes docs, /learn is the fast way to turn something you already know into a reusable skill.
- Bots and voice. I ran it inside my Hermes bots and with a voice agent pop-up in my Agent OS. It handled both fine.
Where it falls short
- Coding is only OK. I asked for a simple ping-pong game. It worked, but it took about five minutes to get there.
- Not frontier level. It won't replace Claude Opus 5.5 for serious builds. If the code matters, use a stronger model.
- It's temporary. Free for a limited time means you shouldn't build your whole stack on it.
So my verdict is simple. Use MissingNo for skills, quick agent tasks, bots and voice. Use a paid frontier model for real coding. If you want the numbers on how models stack up on actual agent work, check my Goldie Bench.
Free and fast is a great combo for the boring 80% of agent work. Just don't hand it your hardest code.

How to use MissingNo in Hermes Cloud
If you run Hermes in the cloud, here are the exact steps I followed:
- Go to Hermes Cloud and click Deploy.
- Click Create agent.
- Open Manage agents and pick the agent you want to use.
- Click Open dashboard.
- Go to the model section.
- Search for Nous Research.
- Type "missing" in the search box.
- Select the stealth model.
- Reload the page.
- Start chatting.
That's it. No API key, no config file. If the model doesn't show up, the free catalog may have changed, so jump to the fallback list below.

How to use MissingNo in Hermes locally
On your own machine, you connect Nous Portal and pick the model. Per the Hermes docs, there are two ways in:
- Fresh install: run hermes setup --portal. The docs say this single command runs the Portal OAuth, lets you pick a Nous model, sets Nous as your inference provider and turns on the Tool Gateway.
- Existing install: run hermes model, choose Nous Portal and pick MissingNo from the list.
My tip: test it in its own profile. Per the Hermes docs, a profile is a separate Hermes home with its own config, memory, sessions and skills, and running hermes profile create followed by a name gives you a new profile plus its own command. That keeps your main agent untouched while you play.
One thing to know about limits. The Hermes docs say that on the free Nous tier, a session someone is watching, like the Desktop app or the terminal chat, won't sit through a cooldown longer than 60 seconds. The turn ends and tells you when the limit lifts, and a configured fallback runs first. Unattended runs like cron and messaging platforms keep waiting. So set a fallback model if you lean on free models a lot.

Free model fallback list
MissingNo won't be free forever. If it disappears, goes paid or you hit the limits, switch to another free model. When I checked the free list, I saw these:
| Free model | Good fallback for |
|---|---|
| Step 3.7 Flash | Quick everyday agent tasks |
| Step 5 preview | The one I run next to MissingNo |
| Ling 3.0 | Another free option to test |
| LongCat | Another free option to test |
| Laguna XS 2.1 | Small, light tasks |
| Solar Mini | Lightweight free option |
The free catalog changes, so check what's live before you switch. I've written up Solar Mini separately in my Solar Mini 4 Hermes guide, and if you want my full ranking of paid and free picks, read the best Hermes Agent models.
Who MissingNo is for
MissingNo makes sense if you are:
- Just starting with Hermes. You can try a real agent without paying for tokens.
- Building skills. It handled /learn really well in my test.
- Running bots. Telegram, Discord and the rest don't always need a frontier model for simple replies.
- Playing with voice. Speed matters more than brilliance when you're talking to an agent. I cover that setup in my Hermes voice agent guide.
- Comparing models. Put it in its own profile and test it against your current model on your real tasks.
It's not for you if you need heavy coding, big refactors or anything where five minutes for a ping-pong game is too slow. Stick with a frontier model there.

FAQ
What is MissingNo in Hermes?
MissingNo is a free stealth coding and agentic reasoning model on Nous Portal that you can pick as your model in Hermes Agent. Nous Research announced it on 10 October 2026 as highly token efficient and free for a limited time.
Is MissingNo free?
Yes, for now. It's listed at $0.00 per million tokens in the Nous Portal free catalog, with free-tier rate limits. The free catalog changes, so it could go paid or vanish. Keep a fallback like Step 5 preview or Solar Mini ready.
Who made MissingNo?
Nobody has said. It's a stealth model, so the maker hasn't been announced. My guess is it could be Nous Research itself, but that's only a guess. The name comes from the Pokémon "missing number" glitch.
Can MissingNo replace Claude Opus 5.5?
No. In my test it was great for skills, bots and fast tool calls, but coding was only OK. A simple ping-pong game took about five minutes. Use it alongside a frontier model, not instead of one.
