In Hermes vs Perplexity Computer, the short answer is this: pick Hermes Agent if you want a free, open-source agent you run and control on your own machine, and pick Perplexity Computer if you want a hosted digital worker that runs in Perplexity's cloud with no setup. Both take multi-step work off your plate, but they are built on opposite ideas about who owns the agent.

Hermes Agent is an MIT-licensed, self-hosted agent from Nous Research. Its latest release is v0.23.0, published on 5 Nov 2026. Perplexity Computer is a paid Perplexity product, announced on 25 Feb 2026, that Perplexity calls "a general-purpose digital worker". Below is a fair side-by-side using only each project's own pages.

What Hermes is, in Hermes vs Perplexity Computer
Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent under the MIT license. You install it yourself and pay only for the model API you choose, or run local models. In v0.23.0, one gateway on each machine owns every conversation, and the CLI, TUI, Desktop app, editors, messaging bots and cron jobs all attach to it. The same release added a Webapp that serves the Desktop workspace from your own gateway in a browser tab. It is off by default.
Hermes leans on plugins, skills and tools. The release notes say the plugin catalog grew from about 600 to over 1,050 entries in this cycle. It also runs scheduled jobs, delegates work to subagents, and can use Perplexity itself as a web-search backend with your own API key. New in v0.23.0 is Hermes rewind, which lets you go back to an earlier prompt and edit it or fork from it.
Hermes is from Nous Research. Hermes Labs is a different company.
What Perplexity Computer is, in Hermes vs Perplexity Computer
Perplexity's help center puts it simply: "Perplexity answers your questions. Computer does your work." According to Perplexity, you describe an outcome and Computer breaks it into tasks and subtasks, creating sub-agents for research, documents, data processing and calls to your connected apps. The work runs in the background, and Perplexity says you can run many Computers in parallel.
Perplexity says every task runs in an isolated compute environment with a real filesystem, a real browser and real tool integrations, with no local install. It connects to tools such as Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Linear, Slack, Notion, Snowflake, Databricks and Salesforce, keeps persistent memory across sessions, and supports scheduled and trigger-based tasks.
Perplexity also describes it as model-agnostic. At launch it said Computer ran Opus 4.6 for core reasoning and handed sub-tasks to other models, including Gemini, Grok and ChatGPT 5.2, and that users can choose models for specific subtasks. It is available on paid plans, on web, iOS and Android, and uses a credit-based system. Some free accounts get a limited, one-time number of free Computer turns. For supported NVIDIA hardware, Perplexity offers Portable Computer, which runs the work on your own device.

Where Hermes wins in Hermes vs Perplexity Computer
- Ownership. Hermes is MIT-licensed code. You can read it, change it and run it wherever you like.
- Model freedom. You plug in the provider you want, including local models. That matters if you already have a preferred model or need data to stay on your own hardware.
- Deep control. Approval prompts, checkpoints, rollback, rewind, spend limits on paid tools and locked skills give you a lot of say over what the agent may do.
- Everywhere you already work. The same session can be used from the terminal, the Desktop app, an editor or a chat bot, because one gateway owns it.
The trade-off is setup. Someone has to install Hermes, connect a model and keep it updated. The best Hermes Agent setup guide covers that step by step.
Where Perplexity Computer wins in Hermes vs Perplexity Computer
- Zero setup. Perplexity says Computer needs no installation. You open it and start a task.
- Search built in. It sits on top of Perplexity's search and deep research, so research-heavy tasks start from that base.
- Hosted sandbox. Perplexity runs the browser, filesystem and tools in an isolated environment, so nothing has to run on your laptop.
- Business connectors. Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Notion, Salesforce and the rest connect from the Plugins page.
- Mobile. You can start and check tasks on iOS and Android.
The trade-off is control. You work inside Perplexity's product, on its plans, with the models it offers.
Hermes vs Perplexity Computer for small business: three scenarios
These are illustrations of fit, not test results.
A solo consultant with no technical help
She wants weekly competitor summaries turned into a slide deck and emailed to her. Perplexity's own example workflow is close to this: research competitors, build a deck and send it through Gmail. With no one to install or maintain software, Perplexity Computer is the simpler fit.
A small agency with a developer on staff
The agency wants an agent that lives in its Slack, runs nightly jobs on its own server and uses the model it already pays for. Hermes fits that shape, because the agency controls the gateway, the plugins and the model.
A clinic or law office with strict data rules
If client data must stay on hardware the business controls, Hermes with a local model is the direct route. Perplexity's Portable Computer also runs locally, but only on supported NVIDIA hardware, so check that page before choosing.

Hermes vs Perplexity Computer: who should pick which
Pick Hermes Agent if you want an open-source agent you own, you want to choose your own models, you are comfortable with some setup, or you need the agent inside your terminal, editor and chat apps.
Pick Perplexity Computer if you want results today with no install, your work is research-heavy, you already live in Gmail, Slack and Notion, and you are happy to work inside a hosted product on a paid plan.
Some people will use both. Hermes can call Perplexity as a search backend, so research quality and self-hosted control are not an either-or. My earlier page on Hermes Agent and Perplexity covers that link. For how I put agents into one working system, see the Agent OS guide. For how models behave under agents, I keep my own notes in Goldie Bench. If you are also weighing xAI's agent, read Grok Bot vs Perplexity Computer.
Hermes vs Perplexity Computer FAQ
Is Hermes Agent free?
Yes. Hermes Agent is free and open source under the MIT license. You pay only for the model provider you choose, and local models cost nothing to run.

Can Hermes and Perplexity Computer run tasks on a schedule?
Yes. Hermes runs cron jobs on your gateway, and Perplexity says Computer supports scheduled jobs and condition-based triggers.
