The DeepSeek Harness desktop download is free from DeepSeek's official Harness page at deepseek.com/en/harness, with installers for Mac (Apple silicon) and 64-bit Windows — and Linux users run the same app through npm with one command.

That's the short answer. Below you'll get the exact install steps for each platform, what to do the first time you open it, and the problems people hit most often. I installed it myself for my video "FREE DeepSeek Harness App is INSANE!" on 5 October 2026, so the first-run parts come from what I actually did.
Quick background if you're new here. DeepSeek Harness (DSH for short) is DeepSeek's open-source agent harness. The official repo is deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness, MIT licensed, with roughly 243,000 stars at the time of writing. The v0.2 preview, announced 2 October 2026, is the release that brought official desktop apps. If you want the full picture of what the app does once it's running, read my DeepSeek Harness desktop overview after this.
DeepSeek Harness Desktop Download: Every Platform at a Glance
Here's where each version comes from. Two platforms get a proper installer. Linux gets the npm route.
| Platform | How to get it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| macOS (Apple silicon) | Installer from deepseek.com/en/harness | Drag to Applications. No Node.js needed. |
| macOS (Intel) | Check the download page | The announcement lists Apple silicon; check the download page for Intel builds. |
| Windows (64-bit) | Installer from deepseek.com/en/harness | Run the installer. No Node.js needed. |
| Linux | npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web | Needs Node.js. Opens the web UI at 127.0.0.1:3080. |
One thing to know before you start. The README warns there will be compatibility-breaking changes while it's in preview, and it asks you to read its safety notice first. Take two minutes and do that.
If you'd rather have someone walk you through the whole thing, the AI Profit Boardroom has a full one-hour DeepSeek Harness course that goes from install to building your own plugins.
DeepSeek Harness Desktop Windows: Install Steps
Go to deepseek.com/en/harness and download the 64-bit Windows installer. Make sure you're on DeepSeek's own site and not a lookalike page from a search ad.
Run the installer once it finishes downloading. Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt the first time you run a new app. If the file came from the official page, you can carry on.
Open DeepSeek Harness from the Start menu. On first launch, sign in or add a model provider. Then pick a folder. That folder is where the agent works, so point it at a real project rather than your whole drive.
That's it. You don't need to install Node.js or pnpm on Windows. Per the v0.2.0-rc.2 release notes (29 September 2026), the desktop app installs and manages the dsh command for you from the menu.
DeepSeek Harness Desktop macOS: Install Steps
Download the Mac installer from deepseek.com/en/harness. The announcement lists Apple silicon, so M-series Macs are the main target.
Open the downloaded file and drag DeepSeek Harness into your Applications folder. Then open it from Applications or Launchpad. If macOS asks whether you're sure you want to open an app downloaded from the internet, confirm it.
Sign in or add a model provider, then pick the project folder you want the agent to work in. On my Mac it was a one-click install, and the app kept my previous sessions synced: my SEO content project, my Obsidian vault and my landing pages were all there when it opened.
Same as Windows, there's no Node.js setup. The app handles the dsh command itself from the menu bar.
The Intel Mac Note
If you're on an older Intel Mac, don't assume you're locked out. The v0.2.0-rc.2 release notes mention a fix for an Intel Mac desktop build. The announcement itself lists Apple silicon, so check the download page for Intel builds before you go another route. If there isn't one for your machine, the npm route below works on a Mac too, as long as Node.js is installed.
DeepSeek Harness Desktop Linux: Run It With npm
There's no official Linux installer in the v0.2 announcement. Linux users run the same app from the npm package instead.
First, install Node.js if you don't already have it. Then open a terminal and run npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web. That pulls the package and starts the web UI locally. Open your browser to 127.0.0.1:3080 and you'll see the same interface the desktop apps use.
The rc.2 release notes also mention a fix for launching on Linux from a graphical entry, so desktop-style launching on Linux is clearly being worked on. For now, the npm command is the official way in.

First-Run Checklist
Once it opens, work through these before you hand the agent anything serious.
- Add a model provider. If you want free models, pick OpenCode or OpenRouter and paste in an API key. My free pick is Flash 3.1 through OpenCode. My demo ran DeepSeek V4.13. Per the release notes, v0.2 also supports non-DeepSeek models through OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
- Pick a mode. When you start a session you choose Standard, PTC, Minimal or Creator. Standard is fine for most work. Creator is the experimental one for building your own plugins: you describe the plugin in chat and Harness writes or edits it.
- Check the review setting. The built-in review plugin lets you choose whether the agent makes changes without your approval. Leave approval on until you trust how it behaves in your project.
- Think about privacy. DeepSeek Harness comes from a Chinese company. My practical advice: don't run private data you aren't comfortable sharing through it. Use it on work where that isn't a concern.
- Start a session properly. New session, pick the project folder, pick a mode, pick a model. Use the plus button to run agents in parallel.
After that, open the plugin manager. It's new in the desktop app, and you install plugins by typing an npm package name. The app showed me that about 60% of DeepSeek Harness users run third-party plugins. My DeepSeek Harness plugins guide covers which ones are worth adding first.

Common Install Problems
Windows app won't start or complains about a port. Earlier builds could clash with something else already using the same port on your machine. Per the v0.2.1-alpha.1 release notes (3 October 2026), the desktop now uses a system-assigned port. Update to that version or newer and the conflict should go away.
"Do I need to install Node first?" Not on Mac or Windows. The desktop app manages the dsh command for you, so there's no separate Node or pnpm install. You only need Node.js for the Linux npm route, or if you choose to run it that way on another system.
Nothing loads at 127.0.0.1:3080. On Linux, check the terminal where you ran the npx command. If it closed or errored, the web UI isn't running. Start it again and keep that terminal open while you work.
The agent can't see your files. You probably picked the wrong folder at the start of the session. Start a new session and point it at the right project.
Something broke after an update. That's expected in a preview. The README says compatibility-breaking changes are coming. Check the release notes on GitHub before you report it as a bug.
Download Safety: Official Builds vs Community Builds
Download DeepSeek Harness only from the official page at deepseek.com/en/harness or from the official GitHub repo, deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness. An agent harness can read files and run shell commands on your computer. A tampered installer is the last thing you want.
Community desktop builds do exist. Several are open source and MIT licensed, and some add things like tray icons, work profiles or Linux packages. They are independent projects, not DeepSeek's. I've broken them down in my DeepSeek Harness desktop GitHub guide. My rule is simple: use the official app first, and if you do try a community client, check who maintains it before you install anything.
Once you're up and running, it's worth seeing how DSH fits alongside the other tools you use. My Agent OS guide shows how my Agent OS integrates DeepSeek Harness directly, and Goldie Bench is where I compare how agents and models actually perform on real tasks. For the bigger picture on the harness itself, read the main DeepSeek Harness guide.

FAQ
Where do I download DeepSeek Harness Desktop?
From DeepSeek's official Harness page at deepseek.com/en/harness. It has installers for macOS on Apple silicon and 64-bit Windows. The official GitHub repo, deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness, is the other safe source. Avoid random mirrors and repackaged downloads.
Does DeepSeek Harness Desktop work on Linux?
Yes, through npm rather than an installer. Install Node.js, run npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web, then open 127.0.0.1:3080 in your browser. You get the same interface the desktop apps use.
Do I need Node.js for the desktop app?
No on Mac and Windows. Per the rc.2 release notes, the desktop app installs and manages the dsh command itself, with no separate Node or pnpm install. Yes for the Linux npm route, because npx runs on Node.js.
