DeepSeek Harness plugins are what make it different from every other agent harness — in DeepSeek's words everything is a plugin, and the v0.2 desktop app adds a plugin manager where you install one by typing its npm package name. That one change turns DeepSeek Harness from a clever terminal tool into something you can shape around the way you actually work.

I tested the new desktop app on camera on 5 October 2026, and the plugin system is the part that stood out most. The modes existed before. The big change in v0.2 is the desktop app plus a proper plugin ecosystem you can manage with a few clicks.

DeepSeek Harness Plugins: What "Everything Is a Plugin" Means

The official repo, deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness, carries the tagline "Everything is a Plugin". It's MIT licensed and sits at roughly 243,000 stars at the time of writing.

Most agent tools have a fixed core with a few add-ons bolted to the side. DeepSeek Harness flips that. The core is small, and nearly everything you touch is a plugin that can be swapped, switched off or replaced.

In practice that means:

So if you don't like how something works, you don't wait for DeepSeek to change it. You swap the plugin. One warning, though: the README says there WILL be compatibility-breaking changes, and it asks you to read its safety notice first. Treat v0.2 as a preview.

If you're brand new to the tool, start with my DeepSeek Harness overview, then come back here.

The Built-in Plugins I Showed

When I opened the plugin manager in the desktop app, these were already there and ready to use:

#PluginWhat it does
1Agent teamsRuns a group of agents that split a job and work on it together.
2Automation tasksTurns a workflow into a scheduled task with adjustable frequency and run history. Per the release notes, tasks keep running after you close the app.
3Voice inputLets you talk instead of type, so you can code with your voice.
4ReviewReviews files and code changes, and lets you choose whether the agent codes without your approval.
5Web searchGives the agent live search so it isn't stuck with what the model already knows.
6Sub-agentsSpins off smaller agents for side tasks so the main session stays focused.
7Agent loopsKeeps an agent working through a task step by step until it's done.
8ShellLets the agent run commands on your machine.

My favourite is automation tasks. My example was simple: "every Monday, make a slide deck on the latest AI automation news". Set it once and it runs every week.

How the Plugin Manager Works

The plugin manager is new in the desktop app, and it's simple. Per DeepSeek's announcement, you install a plugin by typing its npm package name.

Inside the manager you can:

If you haven't installed the app yet, my DeepSeek Harness desktop download guide covers it. In short: installers for macOS on Apple silicon and 64-bit Windows come from the official Harness page at deepseek.com/en/harness. The announcement lists Apple silicon, so check the download page for Intel builds. On Linux, run npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web (you'll need Node.js), and it opens the web UI locally at 127.0.0.1:3080.

Is There a DeepSeek Harness Desktop Plugin for the App Itself?

Kind of. The official app is DeepSeek's own build, but because the shell is just another layer on the plugin system, community projects have built their own. The best example of a deepseek harness desktop plugin is DSH Desktop by Anywhere Labs, an independent community project that isn't affiliated with or endorsed by DeepSeek. I've covered those community builds in my DeepSeek Harness desktop GitHub breakdown. Use the official app first.

Creator Mode: Build Your Own Plugin by Chatting

This is where it gets fun. Creator mode is one of the four modes you can pick when you start a session, and it's the one for building your own plugins.

Per the announcement, Creator mode is experimental. You describe the plugin you want in chat, and DeepSeek Harness writes it or edits it for you. You don't need to know how plugins are structured. You explain the job, then refresh the plugin manager to load what it built.

Per the release notes, v0.2.1-alpha.1 (3 October 2026) went a step further and added a "let the agent create a plugin" button right inside the plugin manager. So you don't even have to start a Creator session. Click the button, describe what you want, and the agent builds it.

Old way: you find a tool that does 80% of what you need and put up with the other 20%. New way: you tell your agent to build the missing piece.

The awesome-dsh-plugin List

If you'd rather not build from scratch, start with the community list. On GitHub I showed awesome-dsh-plugin, which has about 17,800 stars. It sorts plugins by category, including:

  1. Memory - plugins that help the agent remember context across sessions.
  2. UI - plugins that change how the interface looks and behaves.
  3. Models and providers - plugins that connect more models and services.
  4. Themes - visual themes for the app.

One number stuck with me: the app showed that about 60% of DeepSeek Harness users run third-party plugins. That's most people. The ecosystem isn't a side feature. It's how people actually use the tool.

On models: you add a model provider in the app. For free models, pick OpenCode or OpenRouter and paste an API key. My free pick is Flash 3.1 through OpenCode, and my demo ran DeepSeek V4.13. Per the release notes, v0.2 also supports non-DeepSeek models through OpenAI-compatible endpoints. If you want to see how different models stack up on real tasks, check Goldie Bench.

Claude Code Mods Compatibility Layer

Per the release notes, v0.2.1-alpha.1 added an experimental Claude Code Mods compatibility layer. Don't read that as "every Claude Code mod works in DeepSeek Harness now". It doesn't say that.

According to the release notes, the point of the layer is to test the idea that Claude Code Mods are roughly a subset of DSH plugins. It's an experiment, not full compatibility yet. Some mods may work, some won't, and things may change between releases.

If you already use Claude Code with your own skills, like my Claude SEO skill, it's worth watching. Just don't move your whole workflow over until it's stable.

Plugin Safety: Third-Party Code Runs on Your Machine

This is the part people skip, and they shouldn't. A plugin is code. When you install a third-party plugin, that code runs on your computer with whatever access the harness gives it. The shell plugin alone can run commands on your machine.

Before you install anything, check:

Two more practical points. The DSH Desktop README warns that if you expose it on your local network, anyone on that network can operate your computer, so only do that on a network you fully trust. And DeepSeek Harness comes from a Chinese company, so don't put private data through it that you aren't comfortable sharing.

Per DeepSeek's roadmap, a stronger sandbox and better security are coming. Until then, you're the sandbox.

The Planned Plugin Marketplace

Per DeepSeek and the roadmap I covered in my video, a plugin marketplace is planned. Today you find plugins through lists like awesome-dsh-plugin and install them by npm name. A marketplace should make discovery a lot easier.

It's on the roadmap alongside better agent teams, personalised long-term memory, GUI and browser automation, and mobile access. None of that is shipped yet, so plan around what works today.

For the full picture of the desktop release, read my DeepSeek Harness desktop review. And if you want DeepSeek Harness running inside a bigger system, my Agent OS integrates it directly. The Agent OS guide shows how.

FAQ

How do I install DeepSeek Harness plugins?

Open the plugin manager in the v0.2 desktop app and type the plugin's npm package name. Once it's installed you can enable or disable it, and the manager shows the installed version. The built-in plugins, like agent teams, web search and automation tasks, are already there.

Can I build my own DeepSeek Harness plugin?

Yes. Start a session in Creator mode and describe the plugin in chat, and DeepSeek Harness writes or edits it for you. Per the release notes, v0.2.1-alpha.1 also added a "let the agent create a plugin" button in the plugin manager. Hit refresh after it's built so the app loads it. Creator mode is still experimental.

Are DeepSeek Harness plugins safe?

The built-in ones come from DeepSeek. Third-party plugins are code from other people running on your machine, so check the repo, stars and maintainer first, and skip anything asking for more access than it needs. Keep private data you aren't comfortable sharing out of it.
