The Problem: A Team of Agents You Can't See
You spin up a few Hermes agents. One writes content. One checks code. One handles research.

Hermes 3D Office: What Hermes3D Actually Is
The project describes itself as "a 3D virtual office for AI agents you run on your own infrastructure." The README's framing is simple: the gateway is just the control plane, and the product is the office.
A few facts worth knowing about Hermes3D:
- It is built and maintained by LukeTheDev, who posts on X as @iamlukethedev.
- It is MIT licensed, so it is free to use and self-host.
- v1.0.0 landed on 20 August 2026.
- It is written in TypeScript.
- At the time of writing, the repo sits at around 427 GitHub stars and 79 forks.

Here is the important bit. Hermes3D is unofficial. Per the README, it is an independent, community-driven frontend and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or maintained by the teams behind the agent backends it connects to. So it is not a Nous Research product. It is one developer's office built on top of Hermes.

What You Can Do Inside the Hermes3D Office
Per the README, the Hermes3D office lets you:
- Watch agents work in real time in a shared 3D office.
- Switch to a 2D pixel office view, Gather-style pixel art of the same live agents, which is handy on low-power machines.
- Run standups with agents connected to GitHub and Jira.
- Review pull requests from inside the office.
- Monitor QA pipelines and logs.
- Train agents "in the gym" so they develop new skills.
- Reset sessions and clean context with the "janitor" system.
The README also lists what exists in Hermes3D today. That includes fleet management and agent chat streamed from the gateway. It includes agent creation, settings, session controls and approvals. There is a 3D retro office with desks, rooms, navigation, animations and activity cues. There is an office builder for editing and publishing layouts. And there are spaces for standups, GitHub review flows, analytics and system monitoring.
So this is more than eye candy. The office is where you actually manage your agents, not just watch them.
What Hermes3D Runs On
This part trips people up. Hermes3D is the visualization and interaction layer only. It does not install Hermes for you.
Per the README, the office can connect to three kinds of backend:
- Hermes, through the bundled gateway adapter. The adapter talks to the Hermes HTTP API on its default local port.
- A direct HTTP "custom" runtime provider for orchestrator-backed stacks.
- A built-in demo gateway that lets you explore the office with fake agents and no agent framework at all.
That third option matters. You can try the Hermes3D office before you have Hermes running at all.

Setting Up the Hermes 3D Office
My standing advice for anything like this: ask your Hermes agent to set it up and test it for you. Paste the repo link, tell it what you want, and let it do the work. Hand-running commands is the fallback, not the plan.
Here is the flow the README describes, in plain English.
Step one: try demo mode
You need Node.js 20 or newer and npm 10 or newer. Clone the Hermes3D repo, install the dependencies, copy the example env file, and start the dev server. Then run the demo-gateway script, open localhost:3000, and connect Studio to the local gateway.
You now have an office full of fake agents. No framework, no risk. This is the fastest way to see whether Hermes3D is for you.
Step two: connect real Hermes agents
Once you like what you see, run the hermes-adapter script alongside the dev server. Open localhost:3000, then enter your gateway URL and token in Studio. Your real Hermes agents appear in the office.
Step three: go remote
If your agents live on another machine, Tailscale is the README's recommended route. A full Hermes, Tailscale and Hermes3D tutorial ships with the repo, so your agent can follow it for you.
There is also an optional bridge plugin. It makes the office react to chats you have in the Hermes desktop app, the TUI or the CLI. So you talk to an agent in one place and see it respond in the office.

The Hermes3D Security Settings Most People Skip
I flagged this in the video because it is the setting almost everyone ignores. If you only take one thing from this page about Hermes3D, take this.
Per the README:
- Set STUDIO_ACCESS_TOKEN before you expose Studio beyond localhost. That means on a LAN, over Tailscale, or on a public host.
- Set UPSTREAM_ALLOWLIST in production so Studio can only proxy to the gateway hosts you approve.
The README is candid about why. The browser is part of the trust boundary, because the connection flow loads the gateway URL and token into browser memory at runtime. Your agents can take real actions. Do not leave the door to their office open.
Again, the easy way: ask your agent to set both values and confirm they are working before you share the office with anyone.

Honest Limitations of Hermes3D
The README is upfront about where Hermes3D is today. Worth knowing before you commit:
- The 3D office and the office builder are still separate stacks.
- Voice transcription is not bundled. That endpoint returns Not Implemented, so voice notes need an external transcription provider.
- The SOUNDHERMES Spotify jukebox stores only an access token, so you may need to re-authenticate when it expires.
- The multi-agent remote office is labelled beta.

People mix these two up, so let's clear it up. They are different products.
The Hermes Pixel Office is a free, live pixel-art dashboard built by Teknium of Nous Research. Your sessions walk into a cartoon office so you can see activity at a glance.
Hermes3D is LukeTheDev's independent, fuller 3D workspace. It adds standups, PR review, the gym and the office builder, and it also offers its own 2D pixel mode.
