Hermes Agent vs Claude is not really a fight, because Claude is the brain and Hermes Agent is the body that can use that brain. Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant and model family. Hermes Agent is an open-source agent harness that can run on Claude, or any other model, and act on its own with schedules, memory and messaging.

Once you see it that way, the question gets much easier. You are not choosing between two assistants. You are choosing whether you want a smart chat window, or a smart chat window plus an agent that keeps working when you close it.
I use Claude every day. I also run Hermes as my primary agent every day. Here is how they fit together, and when the Claude app on its own is all you need.
If you want the full setup walkthroughs, the AI Profit Boardroom has courses on Hermes, Claude Code and the Agent OS, plus four live coaching calls every week.
What Claude actually is
Claude means two things, and it helps to separate them.
- Claude the assistant. The app you use at claude.ai, on desktop and on mobile. You type, it answers, it can work with files and tools inside that app.
- Claude the model family. The models underneath, like Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1. Other software can call these models through Anthropic's API.
The Claude app is a brilliant thinking partner. It writes, plans, analyses and explains. But it mostly works when you are there talking to it.
What Hermes Agent actually is
Hermes Agent is an open-source, self-hosted AI agent from Nous Research, released under the MIT license. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, WSL2 and Android.
The key word is harness. Hermes does not come with one fixed brain. You plug in a model, and Hermes gives that model hands, memory and a schedule:
- Persistent memory that carries across sessions.
- Self-written skills it saves after it learns a task.
- Cron scheduling so it runs jobs while you are away.
- Messaging through Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email and the CLI.
- Tools like web search, a browser, terminal and files, subagents and MCP.
- Interfaces including the CLI, the Hermes Desktop app and a messaging gateway.
So Claude thinks. Hermes thinks with whatever brain you give it, and then goes and does things.

Notice the "brain" row. Hermes can literally run on Claude. That is why I call them complementary, not rivals.
How to run Hermes with Claude models
Per the Hermes docs, Anthropic is a built-in provider. There are two ways to connect it:
- OAuth login. Run the model picker in Hermes and choose Anthropic. Per the docs, the OAuth route requires a Max plan plus extra usage credits.
- API key. Add an Anthropic API key and pay per token.
You can also reach Claude models through OpenRouter, which Hermes supports too.
Once it is connected, you get Claude's thinking inside an agent that can text you on Telegram, run a job every morning and remember what you told it last week. That is a very different experience to opening a chat tab.
A tip from my own setup: you do not have to run Claude for everything. I use free models through OpenCode inside Hermes for lighter daily jobs, and keep the top Claude models for the work that needs them. If you want to see how I set up Claude as the brain, read my guide on Hermes with Claude. And if you already pay for Claude, check out using Hermes Agent with a Claude Code subscription.

When the Claude app alone is enough
Here is the honest truth. Plenty of people do not need an agent yet.
The Claude app on its own is enough if:
- You mostly want help writing, thinking, summarising or planning.
- You are happy to sit down and work with it, then close it.
- You do not need anything to run on a schedule.
- You do not want to install or maintain anything.
That is a perfectly good place to be. Sign in, get value, done.
When you need Hermes on top
You have outgrown the chat window when you catch yourself saying things like "I wish it would just do this every morning" or "I wish I could message it from my phone while I am out".
Hermes makes sense when:
- You want recurring tasks done without you, like briefings, reports or checks.
- You want one assistant that remembers you across every channel.
- You want to switch models freely, including free and local ones.
- You want your agent self-hosted, on your own machine or server.
Which should you use?
Use Claude if you want the best thinking partner with zero setup. Use Hermes Agent if you want that thinking to turn into work that happens on its own. Use both if you want the strongest version: Hermes as the agent, Claude as one of its brains.
That last option is what I run. Inside my Agentic Operating System, Hermes sits beside OpenClaw, OpenCode, Claude Code and Codex with one shared memory. The Agent OS guide shows how it all connects.
If coding is your main job, the comparison you actually want is Hermes Agent vs Claude Code, because Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for building software.

A simple example of the difference
Say you want a short summary of the AI news that matters to your business every morning.
With the Claude app, you open it, ask for the summary, read it and close the tab. Tomorrow you do it again. It works, but you are the engine.
With Hermes running on a Claude model, you set it up once. Every morning it searches the web, writes the summary with Claude as its brain and sends it to you on Telegram before you are out of bed. Same brain. Totally different result. That is the harness doing its job.
FAQ
Is Hermes Agent a replacement for Claude?
No. Hermes is a harness, not a model. It needs a brain, and Claude can be that brain. Think of Hermes as the thing that lets Claude act on its own.
Do I need a paid Claude plan to use Claude inside Hermes?
Per the Hermes docs, the Anthropic OAuth route needs a Max plan with extra usage credits, or you can use an Anthropic API key and pay per token. You can also run Hermes on free models and skip Claude entirely.
Can Hermes use other models besides Claude?
Yes. It works with many providers, including an OpenAI Codex sign-in, OpenRouter, Nous Portal free models, Ollama and local models. You can switch whenever you want.
Which one is easier for a beginner?
The Claude app. Sign in and start talking. Hermes takes a short setup, but Hermes Desktop has a guided setup chat with a free welcome model, so it is much easier than it used to be. If you want help choosing, book a free AI strategy session.
Final word on Hermes Agent vs Claude: Claude is the brain, Hermes is the agent, and you get the most out of both when you plug one into the other. Still unsure? Grab a free AI strategy session.
