Hermes Agent vs Claude Code comes down to one thing: Hermes Agent is a general agent that runs your day, and Claude Code is a coding agent that builds your software. If you want automations, messaging and memory, start with Hermes. If you want to ship code, use Claude Code. Most people who get serious end up running both.

I use both every single day. Hermes is my primary agent. It handles the daily stuff, talks to me on Telegram, remembers what I care about and runs jobs on a schedule. When I need to build something real, like a tool, a site or a script, I open Claude Code and let Opus 5.5 do the heavy lifting.
So this is not a "pick one forever" fight. It is a "which job are you hiring for" question. Let me break it down.
If you want the full playbook for both, the AI Profit Boardroom has step-by-step courses on Hermes and Claude Code, plus four live coaching calls a week.
What Hermes Agent is built for
Hermes Agent is an open-source, self-hosted AI agent from Nous Research, released under the MIT license. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, WSL2 and even Android. You install it once and it becomes your always-on assistant.
Here is what makes it a general agent:
- Persistent memory. It remembers you across sessions instead of starting from zero every time.
- Self-written skills. When it figures out how to do a task, it can save that as a reusable skill.
- Messaging. You can reach it from Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email and the CLI.
- Scheduled jobs. Cron is built in, so it can run tasks while you sleep.
- Tools. Web search, browser, terminal and files, subagents and MCP.
- Interfaces. The CLI, the Hermes Desktop native app and a messaging gateway.
It is also model-agnostic. Per the Hermes docs, it works with Anthropic, an OpenAI Codex sign-in, OpenRouter, Nous Portal free models, Ollama and local models. Version 0.22 added one-click local models and a plugin catalog of 600 reviewed plugins.
The software is free. You bring the brain.
What Claude Code is built for
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It works in your terminal, your IDE and on desktop. It reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and keeps going until the job is done.
It supports MCP, skills and subagents, so you can extend it. But its whole design points at one target: writing and changing software.
For coding, it is the best tool I have used. When I need a real build done, I reach for Claude Code with Opus 5.5 and it just gets on with it. You do need a Claude subscription or API access to use it.

The cost model, explained simply
This is where people get confused, so let me make it plain.
Hermes Agent is free and open source. The only thing you pay for is the model you plug into it. You can use free models through Nous Portal or a free brain through OpenCode, run a local model on your own machine, or connect a paid model like Claude. So your cost can be zero, or it can be whatever your chosen provider charges.
Claude Code needs a Claude subscription or API access. You are paying Anthropic for the model, and in return you get the strongest coding setup I know of.
That is why I run free or cheap models inside Hermes for the everyday stuff, and save Claude Code for the work where quality really matters. Want help mapping this out for your own business? Book a free AI strategy session and we will look at it together.
Which should you use?
Use Hermes Agent if...
- You want an assistant you can text from your phone.
- You want jobs running on a schedule, like morning briefings, content checks or reports.
- You want an agent that remembers you and gets better over time.
- You want to choose your own model, including free ones.
- You are not a developer and do not plan to become one.
Use Claude Code if...
- You are building software, websites, tools or scripts.
- You work inside a codebase and want an agent that edits files and runs tests.
- You want the best coding quality available and you are happy to pay for a Claude plan.
If you are only going to install one today and you are not a coder, install Hermes. If you write code for a living, Claude Code will pay for itself fast.

Using Hermes and Claude Code together
This is where it gets good. They are not rivals. They stack.
Here is how I split the work:
- Hermes runs the day. Daily automations, scheduled jobs, inbox-style tasks, research and quick answers over Telegram.
- Claude Code builds the tools. When Hermes needs a new script, a dashboard or a site, Claude Code writes it.
- Hermes uses what Claude Code built. Once a tool exists, Hermes can run it on a schedule and report back.
There are two neat bridges between them. Per the Hermes docs, local tool subprocesses keep your normal home folder by default, so external CLIs like Claude Code can find the credentials and config they already use. And Hermes can import sessions from Claude Code. Started a conversation in Claude Code? Hermes reads Claude Code's session logs and lets you continue it inside Hermes.
That is the setup I run inside my Agentic Operating System. Hermes, OpenClaw, OpenCode, Claude Code and Codex sit side by side with one shared memory. If you want to build the same thing, start with the Agent OS guide.
One more tip: open-source agents ship fast and sometimes break. That is why I keep a backup agent ready. Redundancy matters when your business runs on this stuff.
The AI Profit Boardroom includes the Agent OS zip and courses on Hermes, OpenClaw and Claude Code, all for $69/mo.
What about Hermes vs plain Claude, or Codex?
Claude Code is not the only comparison people search for. If you are trying to work out whether you even need an agent, or whether the Claude app is enough, read Hermes Agent vs Claude. That one covers the model vs harness question.
And if you are deciding between Anthropic's coding agent and OpenAI's, read Hermes Agent vs Codex, which covers how Hermes can sign in with your ChatGPT or Codex subscription.

FAQ
Can Hermes Agent write code like Claude Code?
Hermes has terminal and file tools, so it can write and run code. But it is a general agent first. For serious software work, Claude Code is the stronger choice because that is exactly what it is built for.
Can Hermes Agent use Claude models?
Yes. Per the Hermes docs, Anthropic is a supported provider. You can connect with an Anthropic API key, or with OAuth on a Max plan with extra usage credits. That gives Hermes a Claude brain without Claude Code.
Is Hermes Agent free?
The software is free and MIT-licensed. You only pay for the model you use, and you can pick free or local models if you want to spend nothing.
Should a beginner start with Hermes or Claude Code?
If you are not a developer, start with Hermes. It does useful work from day one and you can message it from your phone. Add Claude Code when you need to build something. If you want a hand getting started, book a free AI strategy session.
Bottom line on Hermes Agent vs Claude Code: Hermes runs your day, Claude Code builds your software, and together they make one strong system.
