How to setup Hermes agent without ever opening the terminal — yes, it's possible, and this is the exact path. If "open the terminal" is the line you can't cross, this post is for you.
I'll show you how to install and run Hermes without typing a single command yourself. The trick is to let an AI coding assistant do it for you, which sounds clever but is genuinely how I onboard non-technical members of my community.
Why The Terminal Stops Most People
The actual install commands for Hermes are short, but the terminal feels intimidating. The black screen, the cursor blinking, the worry that you'll break something with one wrong character — most non-technical users give up here.
You shouldn't have to. The technology has moved past the terminal as a hard requirement.
How To Setup Hermes Agent Workaround: Use Claude Code Or Codex
Both Claude Code and Codex are AI coding assistants that run terminal commands for you. You paste what you want done, they do it, and you watch.
That's the whole trick.
Step 1 — Install Claude Code (Or Codex)
Both have installer-style downloads. Claude Code Desktop has an installer for Mac and Windows. Codex Desktop is the same idea.
Pick one, install like a normal app, and open it. That's all you need to do, with zero terminal commands at this stage. I cover the broader setup in Free Claude Code.
Step 2 — Tell It What To Install
Inside Claude Code (or Codex), open a new conversation and paste a message like this:
"I want to install Hermes AI agent on my Mac/Windows/Linux machine. I'd like to use the Ollama local setup with Gemma 4. Please do the install for me — including downloading Ollama, downloading Gemma 4 model, installing Hermes, and connecting them. I don't want to touch the terminal myself."
Send and wait.
Step 3 — Approve The Steps
Claude Code (or Codex) will lay out a plan. Read it through and if it looks reasonable, approve.
It'll start running and you'll see it execute commands in real time. You don't type anything — you just watch and confirm.

Step 4 — Wait For Downloads
The longest step is the model download. Gemma 4 is around 7GB and DeepSeek is bigger.
Could take 5 to 20 minutes depending on your internet connection. Just wait and don't close anything.
Step 5 — Test It
Once Claude Code says everything's set up, open Hermes and send a test message.
If you get a reply, you're done. You just installed Hermes without touching the terminal.
Three Common Non-Technical Issues
These are the issues I see most often when guiding non-technical users through this.
1. "Claude Code wants permissions I don't understand." Claude Code needs read/write access to install dirs, network access (to download models), and permission to run install commands. Standard for any installer. Click allow.
2. "I don't see Hermes after install." Claude Code should tell you where Hermes was installed. Open the location it tells you and there'll be a launcher.
3. "Hermes can't see Ollama." Make sure Ollama is running in the background. Claude Code can troubleshoot if you ask "Hermes can't see Ollama, please fix it."
Why This How To Setup Hermes Agent Path Works
Claude Code is genuinely good at running install scripts and the Hermes install is a well-documented standard process. Combine those two and you've got a no-terminal install that works reliably.
The same trick works for OpenClaw, ClawX, and other agent installs.
What If I Want To Customise Later?
Once Hermes is installed, you don't have to touch the terminal again. Hermes has a config file you can edit in any text editor, or you can ask Claude Code to make config changes for you.
You're never forced back into the terminal unless you choose to be.
The Cloud-Only Path (Even Less Terminal)
If you genuinely don't want anything installed on your machine, use Max Hermes, the cloud-hosted Hermes from MiniMax. Go to agent.mminia.io, click "Start Now", and use Hermes inside MiniMax.
Zero install. But there are trade-offs: a paid plan is required, you can't link to Telegram or other apps, and you can't upload files.
For demos and casual use this is fine. For real work, local Ollama is better.
What You Get After Setup
Once Hermes is installed you get 70+ skills (web search, browser, terminal, memory, TTS, etc), a free local model running via Ollama, the ability to switch models any time without touching terminal again, and channel connections (Telegram, Discord, etc).
I cover post-setup workflows in Hermes Agent Workspace and Hermes Open Web UI.
Why Non-Technical Users Should Do This
Three reasons it's worth pushing past the friction.
1. AI agents are getting more powerful. The non-technical users who run them now will have a real edge over peers who wait.
2. Setup is the only barrier. Once Hermes is running, daily use doesn't require any technical skills at all.
3. Claude Code makes it accessible. If you can describe what you want in English, you can install Hermes via Claude Code.
What Hermes Will Do For You
Once running, Hermes can answer questions like ChatGPT, search the web on your behalf, summarise long documents, draft emails and content, run scheduled tasks, and connect to messaging apps.
It's a personal AI assistant that's local, free, and private. Hard to argue with that combination.
How To Setup Hermes Agent — Daily Reality After Install
What it actually looks like once running. Open Hermes like opening any app. Chat with it. Use skills as needed. Done.
You don't ever have to think about Ollama, configs, or terminals again.
