Hermes Workspace v2 vs the standard Hermes v0.9 dashboard is the question most Hermes users are asking, so here's the honest comparison. I've used both extensively, so this post is the side-by-side rather than a marketing pitch for either.

What each one offers, what each one lacks, and when to use which.

Hermes Workspace Quick Verdict

Hermes Workspace v2 wins for daily chat with agents, multi-profile management, visual task tracking (Kanban), mobile/PWA experience, and multi-agent (with Swarm plugin).

Hermes v0.9 dashboard wins for being lighter on resources, simpler if you only need analytics, and being the default install (no extra setup).

For most users, Workspace v2 is the better choice.

What Each One Is

Hermes v0.9 Dashboard

The default Hermes mission control. It comes with Hermes since v0.9 and you run it with hermes dashboard in terminal.

Hermes Workspace v2

A free open-source app that's a native gateway with chat, terminal, memory, skills, and files. Installed separately on top of Hermes.

Feature Comparison

Feature v0.9 Dashboard Workspace v2
Sessions overview Yes Yes
Analytics Yes Limited
Scheduled tasks Yes Yes
Config files Yes Yes
Skills setup Yes Yes (better)
Key setup Yes Yes
Chat with agents No Yes
Multi-profile Limited Yes
Kanban tasks No Yes
Virtual office view No Yes
Mobile/PWA No Yes
Multiple themes No Yes (8)

For most daily use, Workspace v2 has more.

UI Quality

The v0.9 Dashboard is functional but utilitarian. It looks like a developer tool with sessions, analytics, and configs in tabs.

Workspace v2 has a modern UI that looks like Claude Desktop or ChatGPT. The chat panel is front and centre, there's sidebar navigation, and 8 visual themes are available.

For people who spend hours in the UI daily, v2 is the upgrade.

The Killer Feature: Chat

This is the single biggest difference between the two.

The v0.9 Dashboard has no chat with agents. You see analytics and sessions but can't talk to your agent inside the dashboard. Workspace v2 has native chat with agents. You can ask your agent questions, give missions, see responses — all in the dashboard UI.

This alone is why most users will prefer Workspace.

Multi-Profile Management

The v0.9 Dashboard has limited multi-agent management. You can technically run multiple agents but managing them is painful.

Workspace v2 has a full multi-profile system. Each profile has its own system prompt, model, skills, and memory. Switch between them with one click.

For multi-agent setups, Workspace is the only sensible choice.

Mobile Experience

The v0.9 Dashboard is desktop only. Workspace v2 is a progressive web app that works on iPhone, Android, iPad, plus desktop. Same UI everywhere.

For solo operators who aren't always at desk, this matters.

Resource Usage

Honest comparison.

The v0.9 Dashboard is lighter and runs alongside Hermes terminal with minimal overhead. Workspace v2 is heavier (it's a full app) and uses a few hundred MB extra.

For low-spec machines, v0.9 wins. For modern hardware, it doesn't matter.

Setup Complexity

The v0.9 Dashboard is built into Hermes. Run hermes dashboard and you're in. Zero install.

Workspace v2 is a separate install at 10 to 20 minutes setup (covered in Hermes Workspace Setup).

For "I just want to see my Hermes status", v0.9 is faster. For "I want to chat with my agent", v2 is the goal.

When To Use Each

Use the v0.9 Dashboard if you only need analytics plus scheduled tasks view, you're on a very low-spec machine, or you prefer minimal setup.

Use Workspace v2 if you want to chat with your agent, you manage multiple agent profiles, you want mobile access, you like visual UI, or you're running Hermes Swarm (which requires Workspace).

For 95% of users, Workspace v2 is the answer.

Can You Run Both?

Yes. They don't conflict.

Some users run v0.9 dashboard for analytics and Workspace v2 for daily chat. Both point at the same Hermes backend.

What Hermes Workspace V2 Doesn't Have

Be honest. No formal team or enterprise features. Limited analytics depth (v0.9 wins on raw analytics). Some niche v0.9 features (specific config screens) are not yet in v2.

For most users, none of these matter.

What's Likely To Happen Long-Term

Three predictions for the medium term.

1 — Workspace v2 becomes the default

Hermes is likely to integrate Workspace-style UI into future versions.

2 — v0.9 dashboard fades

Less active development on standalone dashboard.

3 — Mobile becomes core

The PWA approach proves popular and expect more mobile-first features.

For now, Workspace v2 is the future-leaning choice.

My Hermes Workspace Recommendation

If you're new to Hermes, install Hermes itself first (How To Setup Hermes Agent), skip v0.9 dashboard, and install Workspace v2 directly.

If you're an existing v0.9 user, try Workspace v2 alongside and switch fully when ready. For most users the switch happens within a week.

Time Investment

Setup time. The v0.9 dashboard is 0 minutes (built in). Workspace v2 is 15 to 20 minutes setup.

Daily time saved by chat alone: 30+ minutes a day if you used to switch between dashboard and terminal. Setup pays back in 1 to 2 days.

Daily Reality Of Each

What running each looks like day to day.

v0.9 Dashboard daily

Open dashboard, check analytics, switch to terminal to chat with agent, switch back to dashboard, repeat.

Workspace v2 daily

Open Workspace, chat with agent in chat panel, check tasks on Kanban board, manage skills and memory in sidebar, all in one window.

Workspace is a meaningful workflow upgrade.
